Network Urbanism (1990–2002)

Dr. Schneier-Madanes focuses her research on urban technical networks, or the lack thereof. She uses the French urbanisme des réseaux  or the “network urbanism” approach,  referenced to technical network-oriented analysis and planning in social and spatial contexts.

She has conducted research on water, TV and transport utilities in Latin American cities. For these purposes, Buenos Aires has become a crucial urban research lab, providing different scales and time frames for analysis.

Central to the Buenos Aires research has been a focus on the neighborhood level and on the relations between formal and informal actions. This approach allows us to explore the “interzone” between urbanized areas served by the utilities and those without them. How do inhabitants manage to have access to urban services in areas not covered by networks? What is the role of user participation, grass-roots organizations or social movements to solve these critical issues? What are the policy challenges for universal delivery of water services?
